Lost Security Deposit

I’ll probably move out this year

Someone else will move in

I’m not going to exert myself

Cleaning this place

The warped hardwood floors

And the muted grey drywall

Wear the salt and the sugar

Of nights alone

The lighting is poor

And darkness cloaks

But does not erase

The yellowed stains

Lazy, I’ll leave it where it’s dried

Maybe the previous tenets

Tried harder, cared more

And got results

What other depravity have these walls known?

Have I wrought new lows?

What could be worse?

I will wonder

Another may find life tossed aside

It haunts this space

In which someone new will have a chance

To try living
